Technology has been updating for centuries.  Humans have also managed to keep pace with the changes. However, tech analysts now suggest that there is a surge in technological development that leaves humans behind.  When technological innovations outpace humans, new technologies and tools emerge in workplaces. A mismatch occurs when workers’ current experiences are not compatible with new technologies and tools.   

In education, the rapid pace of technology means that STEMS( science, technology, engineering, and math) programs cannot develop new, updated courses to train graduates with the emerging skills.

The reasons why the full participation of the willing workers did not happen could be that full-time workers may not have time out of the office to participate in a course, or not all workers can afford the course fees. Workers may also not know where to enroll for training.

While the demand for IT-skilled workers is high, the IT labor market lacks available manpower, resulting in a shortage. Companies that cannot offer competitive packages cannot retain skilled workers, which also exacerbates the situation.

Burnout is an occupational-related stress that affects workers’ personal well-being, reduces their motivation, and leads to poor work performance. The World Health Organization recognized the burnout issue, and it is on the rise among IT professionals.  The issue causes many IT professionals to leave the industry altogether, creating a vacuum. Filling many of those positions is difficult since many IT positions require specialized roles. 

Roles Most Affected by the Gap

Critical skills required in this position are Kubernetes orchestration, Terraform, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC), CI/CD pipeline automation, observability tools, and FinOps (cloud cost management). Companies adopt four strategies to solve the skills shortages in the IT industry. These are

  • Reskilling and Upskilling
  • Skill-based hiring
  • Internal training
  • Hiring remote talent

Companies that want to retain workers adopt a reskilling approach, which involves training employees for new jobs. For example, manufacturing companies are reskilling employees in the use of robots, or retail agents in digital marketing.

Similar to reskilling is upskilling, which involves advanced training of the present skill. Many organisations, for example, are upskilling their HR department employees through digital HR courses. Training on these courses will bring more automation and efficiency in HR process.

Skills-based hiring is a ready-made solution to skills shortages. The hiring process of this approach emphasises candidates’ real ability, and potential to do a certain job, and less importance on their academic credentials, or previous years of experience. Many tech giants and startups adopted Skills-based hiring as their recruitment process. The recruitment criteria of many roles at Google, for example, are problem-solving and programming ability rather than academic degrees. Instances of Skills-based hiring are also found in IBM. For the roles of cybersecurity and cloud computing, the company places more emphasis on practical experiences than academic achievements.

Microsoft and Amazon Web Services, in a partnership program, offer online courses and award certificates to job-ready candidates.

Remote hiring is another good option to fill the skills gap for hiring managers. Remote, a human resources technology company, published a global HR survey report on remote hiring. The key finding of the report is that companies that hire remotely often report finding higher-quality candidates and easier access to specialized skills.

The IT labor market of 2025 taught us some valuable lessons. First, despite the availability of IT talent, companies are struggling to find the right candidates due to job-specific practical experience.
